No, your not naked.... the pottery is!!! That means there is no glaze adorning the piece.
This technique in pottery is a bit time consuming but fun and exciting .
The newly made piece is coated with Terra sigillita (clay water) and polished, it's the bisqued fired. The second stage is to coat the bisqued piece with a clay slip used as a protective barrier to the vessel's clay surface. It's then coated with a glaze slip. At this point you can scribe into the piece or leave it be. It's then fired in a gas kiln and removed at the appropriate time. It's placed in a container with combustable material. This material catches on fire and the container is sealed. The subsequent fire produces smoke that will be absorbed into the cracks of the protective clay slip/glaze barrier. The piece is then removed from the container and sprayed with water. At this point the protective eggshell like coating will fall off and you have a "naked" piece. Anywhere the smoke penetrated the cracks or carved lines will be black. The piece is ready to be sealed with a protective wax coating.
